Transforming lab environments with multi-channel LLM integration

Modern laboratories demand enhanced automation and integrated data management, yet integrating devices with advanced machine learning remains challenging. Our laboratory prototype introduces a multi-channel infrastructure that leverages large language models (LLMs) integrated by a radical new way of prompt engineering to automate and augment laboratory workflows and data content.
The architecture comprises three layers:

1. Stem Layer (MQTT/Lab Devices): Collecting real-time information.
2. Thalamus Layer (DB, ‚If-Then‘, LIMS, ELN): This layer acts as an intermediary, preprocessing data and relaying commands to a Noun-Verb framework for prompt engineering. This framework enhances command clarity by structuring prompts into specific actions (verbs) and targets (nouns), facilitating precise interactions with LLMs. This layer also contains the lab safety rules.
3. Cortex Layer (ChatGPT): This layer handles advanced semantic processing and decision-making and passes tasks to the LLM for execution.

The system was evaluated through simulations and real-world testing across various chemistry scenarios. Results demonstrated significant improvements in workflow efficiency and reduced human error, leading to more robust and reproducible experiments. The system also ensures continuous monitoring and maintains comprehensive audit trails, enhancing safety and regulatory compliance.
This new approach to automated laboratory systems marks a transformative step in the interaction between workers and their environment, harnessing the capabilities of LLM-integrated devices. By employing advanced prompt engineering techniques and a radical new prompt-based communication protocol, the system sets a new standard for intelligent automation, poised to revolutionize experimental procedures in chemical and industrial research.
