Job Description



AECOM is actively seeking a Entry-Level  Structural Bridge Engineer for our Roanoke, Virginia office.

As a Structural Bridge Engineer, you will work with project teams in developing a range of engineering solutions from initial concepts through to detailed design for implementation and support roles during the construction phase. This is a diverse role that will involve your contribution and insight into the effective delivery of its current and future portfolio of projects.

This position is expected to start Spring/Summer 2027.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in the structural analysis and design of highway, railroad, and pedestrian bridges in accordance with AASHTO, DOT, and local agency standards.
  • Prepare engineering calculations, design reports, and technical documentation under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Develop and revise bridge plans, details, and construction documents using MicroStation, AutoCAD, OpenBridge, or similar design software.
  • Support bridge load ratings, inspections, and condition assessments for existing structures.
  • Perform quantity calculations and assist with cost estimates for bridge rehabilitation and replacement projects.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary project teams, including roadway, geotechnical, hydraulic, and traffic engineers.
  • Participate in field inspections, data collection, and construction observation activities.
  • Review shop drawings, material submittals, and contractor requests for information (RFIs) during construction.
  • Assist with the preparation of engineering studies, feasibility analyses, and alternatives evaluations.
  • Ensure design work complies with client requirements, applicable codes, and quality control procedures.
  • Support project managers with schedule tracking, project documentation, and client deliverables.
  • Utilize engineering software to perform structural modeling and bridge analysis.

Qualifications



Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science from an ABET accredited program in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or related field.
  • Valid US Driver's License is required for this position. As a condition of employment, selected candidate must pass a Motor Vehicle Records review.

Qualifications

  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification.
  • Master of Science (with Structural Engineering concentration).
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Word and Excel.
  • Familiarity with AASHTO Codes and Bridge Engineering practices.
  • Structural problem analysis skills (including knowledge/use of design and calculation tools, software).
  • Experience with computer analysis and design software such as LEAP Bridge, STAAD.Pro, AASHTOWare BrR, CSiBridge, and MDX.
  • Experience with MicroStation, OpenBridge, and AutoCAD.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to interact with clients in a professional manner.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Available for periodic travel.
  • Relevant intern/coop/work experience is of additional benefit.
